Not even the seagulls could stop Jorge Lorenzo from conquering pole position at Phillip Island.

It was an intense battle between Championship leader Marc Marquez and #99 (Lorenzo) who has to make sure he is not outscored by 8 points this weekend if he wants to keep his championship hopes (and crown retention) up.

Kinja'd!!!

Marquez who is a previous winner here as well, took a bit of a step backward on Friday Practice when he over gassed the Lukey Heights corner, causing his rear to step-out.

“On the crash I opened the gas at the same place, but when I tried to open it a little bit more the rear was sliding so aggressively. Maybe I opened a little too much. I know now that I can't open more gas in that corner!”

It will surely be an interesting race, as all riders will be forced to change bikes at some point in the first 14 laps of the race due to Pirelli’s Bridgestone's concern with tires overheating on the resurfaced circuit.

Surely he could reach down and pull it out. Question is, did he know?

He was actually on a fast lap, which I think gave him provisional pole, so doing so (if he knew) would have cost him time.

He then went on to even lower that time though.

throttle on the bike is on the right handlebar, so he would've had to sacrifice a lot of time to pull the bird out.

Oh this looks so dangerous for the riders and birds. I suggest a sensible solution to add nets above all racetracks around the world to prevent such future tragedies.

It all depends on what's happening.

Is he losing .05 sec a lap and not overheating? Leave it.

Is he losing .5 seconds a lap and not overheating? Will the 10 seconds of no throttle outweigh the 21 remaining laps at the slower pace? Get it.

Will the bird eventually fall into the radiator, leaving it unreachable? Coast for 10 seconds and get it.

Is the bike overheating, Coast for 10 seconds and get it.

He knew it cause it's clear in the vid that he tucks away behind the windscreen to avoid the birds hitting his visor. You know you're gonna hit something if you respond like that and the impact would've been felt as well.

As a former security officer, I generally think that the standard of security is going downhill. ex army are not applying, for security jobs due to poor pay rates.

this thing rarely happened before, and now it happening too much. one complaint and your gone, so it hard to get top drawer people to work these events.

one of the reasons, why i hate security work now.

He knew it hit, whether or not he knew it was stuck there, only he can say. Considering it was at the start of a 15 min Q2 session and didn't seem to affect his bike or his times at all, he seems to have made the right choice to go until his tire was done and finish the stint.

They only really have time for 2 runs of a few laps each in the new qualifying setup, which makes it great to watch, so sacrificing one run when there is no real reason (wasn't being slowed down or feeling problems with the bike) doesn't make sense. There definitely is not time for 21 more ~1.5 minute laps in a 15 minute session.

God damn it, there's NO SUCH THING as a "seagull" (at least not officially in the avian nomenclature).

There's a joke i heard about a biology professor giving a lecture about birds or something and a student asked about seagulls, causing the professor to pause, confused. He then said, "I've heard of beagles and eagles, but never C Gulls."

I'm not sure of the exact wording, but you get the gist.

As an Australian I was amazed while searching for the video yesterday to see that's what a lot of people thought they were saying, not realising it was an (only slightly) exaggerated version of the Australian "a" sound and the clipped consonant at the end of the word.
